For those youth whom the screen reveals has the potential to run, is a risk to others, or otherwise is likely to violate conditions of community supervision, he or she can be detained in one of the eight secure juvenile detention centers operated by DYS. DYS operates correctional facilities for juveniles. Originally established as the Girls Industrial School by Act 199 in 1905, the center houses boys and girls. The secured center holds up to 42 beds and cares for male offenders from throughout the state. This facility focuses on providing a secure environment while also offering rehabilitative programs aimed at reintegration into society. DYS is the agency statutorily mandated to provide for the care and supervision of youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services.
